Mongolian Beef is a popular Chinese-American dish known for its rich flavors and simplicity. Despite its name, it has no direct connection to traditional Mongolian cuisine but rather is a creation inspired by the flavors of northern China.

Ingredients Needed

Mongolian-Beef-Recipe-3

Main Ingredients

  • Thinly sliced beef (such as flank steak)
  • Cornstarch
  • Vegetable oil
  • Green onions
  • Garlic

Sauce Ingredients

  • Soy sauce
  • Brown sugar
  • Hoisin sauce
  • Ginger (fresh or ground)
  • Red pepper flakes

Preparing the Ingredients

Slicing the Beef

To achieve the perfect texture, slice the beef thinly against the grain. This ensures that each bite is tender and easy to chew.

Mixing the Sauce

In a bowl, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, hoisin sauce, ginger, and red pepper flakes. Adjust the quantities to suit your taste preferences, whether you prefer a sweeter or spicier sauce.

Cooking Instructions

Preparing the Pan

Heat vegetable oil in a skillet or wok over medium-high heat. You want the pan to be hot enough to sear the beef quickly.

Cooking the Beef

Toss the sliced beef in cornstarch until evenly coated. This step helps to create a crispy exterior when the beef is cooked. Once the oil is hot, add the beef to the pan in a single layer. Cook for 2-3 minutes until browned, then flip and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Adding the Sauce

Once the beef is cooked to your desired level of doneness, add the sauce to the pan. Stir well to coat the beef evenly, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.

Serving Suggestions

Pairing with Rice

Mongolian Beef pairs perfectly with steamed white rice or brown rice. The fluffy texture of the rice complements the rich flavors of the beef.

Garnishing Options

Garnish your Mongolian Beef with sliced green onions for a pop of color and freshness. You can also sprinkle sesame seeds or red pepper flakes for added flavor and visual appeal.

Tips for Success

Ensure the pan is hot before adding the beef to achieve a nice sear.
Don’t overcrowd the pan—cook the beef in batches if necessary to prevent steaming.
Taste the sauce as you go and adjust the seasoning to suit your preferences.

Variations and Substitutions

Substitute chicken or tofu for beef for a different twist on this dish.
Add vegetables such as bell peppers, broccoli, or snap peas for added color and nutrition.

Health Considerations

While Mongolian Beef is delicious, it’s also important to enjoy it in moderation as it can be high in sodium and sugar. Opt for lean cuts of beef and watch your portion sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I use chicken instead of beef?

Yes, you can easily substitute chicken for beef in this recipe. Simply slice boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs thinly and follow the same cooking instructions.

How do I make it less spicy?

If you prefer a milder version of Mongolian Beef, simply reduce the amount of red pepper flakes in the sauce or omit them altogether.
